I liked it better when it was canceled, simply because the only real solution to the North Korea problem is the end of the Kim regime, and Trump may think he’s a great negotiator, but he’s not going to get that.
Maybe he thinks the fact that he canceled it initially lit a fire under Bowl Cut Jr. and made him realize he would have to make real, verifiable concessions because he’s no longer dealing with Clinton, Bush, Obama, etc. Or maybe Bowl Cut Jr. figures he can snow this latest American president just like his father and grandfather snowed all the others.
Either way, I guess Trump can’t wait to find out:
President Trump said Friday that a high-stakes summit between him and Kim Jong Un is back on for June 12, following a lengthy meeting with a top North Korean official in the Oval Office.
“We’ll be meeting on June 12 in Singapore,” the president told reporters after the North Korean emissary left the White House.
He called Friday’s meeting with North Korea’s Kim Yong Chol a “great start.” Trump confirmed that the visiting official gave him a personal letter from dictator Kim Jong Un, though he hadn’t yet read it.
Trump spoke to reporters after an extraordinary scene played out on White House grounds, with Trump hosting the North Korean official for over an hour in the Oval Office — the latest gesture in an effort by both sides to get talks back on track after North Korea’s belligerent rhetoric prompted Trump to nix the summit last week.
Trump said the meeting was supposed to just be about “the delivery of a letter” but ended up being a lengthy conversation with the “second most powerful man in North Korea.”
“We talked about a lot of things,” Trump said. “We really did. But the big deal will be on June 12.”
One of two things seems to be at play here: Either Trump has some serious leverage no one else knows about that will allow him to get real concessions, or Trump’s ego has convinced him that he will come out of this with beautiful, wonderful deal because he is Donald Trump and that’s what Donald Trump does.
I still liked it better when it wasn’t happening. But maybe while Kim is in Singapore some saboteurs can take over the country in his stead. It’s the only outcome that would make this gambit really worth it.
