TBS: Hey, Samantha Bee apologized, and an apology always takes care of it

By Dan Calabrese

This apparently became the standard within the past hour or two. When it was Roseanne and ABC an apology was nowhere near enough to save the offender.

But come on. Nothing was ever going to happen to Samantha Bee and everyone knew that. She just had to give TBS a pretext to declare the matter settled, and a mealy-mouthed apology will suffice when you know the mainstream media are going to whitewash what you did anyway:

In a statement to HuffPost, Bee said: “I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.”

The apology comes after White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders singled Bee out for criticism and called the host’s language “vile and vicious.”

“The collective silence by the left and its media allies is appalling,” Sanders said in a statement to The Wrap.

“Her disgusting comments and show are not fit for broadcast, and executives at Time Warner and TBS must demonstrate that such explicit profanity about female members of this administration will not be condoned on its network,” the press secretary added.

In a statement to HuffPost, TBS also apologized: “Samantha Bee has taken the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate language she used about Ivanka Trump last night. Those words should not have been aired. It was our mistake too, and we regret it.”

TBS, which airs “Full Frontal,” is a part of media conglomerate Turner, owned by Time Warner. The channel initially had the clip of Bee’s segment available online and has since taken it down.

If Bee really regretted saying it, why was she so willing to put the video clip out on social media this morning? She only regrets it because people actually noticed that there is no difference whatsoever between what she did and what Roseanne did, despite the left’s insistence that this represents a “false equivalence.”

No. It represents a simple recognition of how things work around here. A liberal like Samantha Bee can insult Ivanka Trump because no one who controls Bee’s status is interested in defending Ivanka Trump. Roseanne cannot do the exact same thing to Valerie Jarrett because the mirror opposite set of facts is at play.

No one here is really interested in civility or decency. It all depends who’s on the receiving end of the vile insult. But TBS had to make Bee check a box in order to justify keeping her show on the air, so Bee checked the box. Checking that exact same box didn’t save Roseanne, but like we said, the rules are not the same – and everyone knows that.
