Nixon had the Watergate break -in, and an unarguable subsequent coverup. Clinton was absolutely nailed for perjury. So far, Trump has none of that. Democrats like to scream about abuse of power, bribery, and extortion, but they simply don’t have the goods.
That’s the message from Ken Starr, a guy who knows a thing or two about presidential impeachment. He thinks Republicans are having a strong showing, and Dems aren’t showing much at all:
“The members were very strong. I think the members overall acquitted themselves extremely well on both sides of the aisle. The quality of the questioning was extremely high for the most part. One key thing, the Republicans not only are rock solid – so that means if this trend continues – there is no hope for impeachment… for the conviction in the Senate.”
“And here, to me, here was something that was very telling: No crime was proven today. There were a lot terms used, ‘extortion’ and ‘bribery,’ but no crime. This is very unlike Nixon and unlike Clinton.”

Starr’s detractors will argue that he’s been arguing against impeachment for months, so he must be in the tank for the President. I don’t know to what extent Starr admires or dislikes Trump, or even if that’s a factor at all. What I do know is that Dems carping about Starr’s supposed bias are simply “shooting the messenger.”
The fact is that Starr’s dim opinion of Schiff’s dog and pony show has been echoed throughout the media – particularly after the Dems’ dismal performance during the opening day of testimony.

Things are not going well for the impeachment push. The faster the Democrats admit that, the faster Nancy Pelosi can change course. If they push forward with this, they’ll only end up hurting themselves.
